#8: Learning to Write
Instructional Objective: Children will learn to identify words with the Silent E phonics rule, and continue to build a vocabulary of words with the Silent E trait. Students will also work cooperatively in pairs, each with a specific roll. Finally, students will become familiar with using computer technology.
Software Rationale: Software will be used as an interactive approach to teaching phonics; specifically identifying the Silent E.
"Saddle the Silent E"
Prerequisite Skills: First grade Open Court Phonics, or similar; the Silent E rule must have been introduced prior to this lesson. Basic computer skills are needed as well.
Anticipatory Set: Children are sitting on carpet. Teacher says, "We have been reviewing words that have the Silent E rule in them. Today we will play two games, one on the carpet for review, and one on the computer for practice to make sure you understand this very important phonics rule."
Process:
"Please
stand up if this word ('cap', for example) can be made into a new word
that you know by adding a Silent E (teacher is holding up an index card
with the word on it or has written it on the board). If you know
the new word, stand up and be prepared to tell the answer." Repeat
this process with several more words until the students you feel the review
is adequate.
Assign
children in groups of two to a computer. Children will need a piece
of paper, folded in half. On the top of one half, label the side
"No Silent E" and the other side "Silent E words". One of the children
will operate the mouse, and one will write the answer, but both will decide
which side of the paper the answer goes on. The children can switch
jobs after 7-8 words.
Evaluation:
Students
will turn in their worksheet at the end of the lesson. The teacher
can look over and evaluate the worksheet based on accuracy, and devise
further lesson plans as needed to reteach or clarify the concept of Silent
E.
