About Geography

Geographers study the interaction between human societies and their environments, characterize the regions and localities that result, and analyze the spatial distributions and processes of particular natural and human phenomena. Being equally a natural science and a social science equipped with geographical information science techniques, geography integrates the physical and human environments. Thus, geographers have long applied integrated multidisciplinary approaches to solve real-world problems at all spatial scales from local to global.

• Environmental and Physical Geography (hazards, water resources, hydrology, biogeography, climatology, palæoclimatology/palæoecology, arid environments, GIS applications in environmental geography, and environmental applications of remote sensing). • Geospatial Techniques (GIScience, remote sensing, cartography, spatial statistics, field methods, qualitative methods, GPS, epistemology and ethics). Responsible faculty: Drs. • Human Geography (cultural geography, social geography, urban geography, economic geography, medical geography, GIS applications in urban geography, geographies of tourism). Responsible faculty: Drs. Baruah, Curtis, Del Casino, Gossette, Jocoy, Sidorov, and Thien and Professors Emeritus/a Drs. Splansky and Tyner; with 2007-08 adjunct faculty Drs. C. Carter, Lassiter, and Sumner; Messrs. N. Carter and Frazier.
• Global Studies (world regional geography, globalization, uneven development, gender and development, local change/global context, international environmental issues, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Russia, the U.S. and California). Responsible faculty: Drs. Baruah, Curtis, Del Casino, Gossette, Jocoy, Laris, Lee, Sidorov, and Thien and Professor Emeritus Splansky with 2007-08 adjunct faculty Drs. C. Carter, Lassiter, McDaniel, and Sumner; Messrs. Behrens, Carter, Frazier, and Perret; and Ms. Wranic.

• Regional Geography, with courses covering all major regions of the world
• General Education, with lower division courses satisfying Natural Science and Social Science requirements and interdisciplinary Explorations and Capstone courses for the upper division General Education requirement
• Geographic Education, including a joint position with the College of Education and the Liberal Studies Program
• Extension Services, including a GIS Certificate offered through University College and Extension Services
