1978     Ph.D. in Anthropology and Certificate of the East Asian Institute, Columbia University in the City of New York.  Dissertation title:  Induced Abortion and Contraceptive Method Choice among Urban Japanese Marrieds.


1968      Bachelor of Arts. Anthropology, University of California at Santa Barbara.  Graduated with Highest Honors, Phi Beta Kappa.

Osaka, Japan, one year:  affiliated with the Osaka Bioscience Institute, Protein Engineering Research Institute, and an Osaka area medical college, 1990-1991.
