• Based on two dimensions
• spatial nesting of smaller features into larger ones like the classic Earth schemes
• fifth order nests inside fourth
• fourth nests inside third
• except: the second order is based on conspicuousness and does not nest into the first order
• these features can be contained in a third order feature or can sprawl across the first order division
• they are useful as a framework to hang students' developing mental maps of Mars
