Earth Detour
The orders of relief scheme on Earth
- Modern incarnations:
- first order: oceans vs. continents or underlying plates
- second order: major mountain systems vs. great lowlands on a continent or, in oceans, continental rises, mid-ocean ridges, abyssal plains, and subduction trenches
- third order: geomorphic provinces or major landscapes with similar geological processes (e.g., Sierra Nevada, Great Central Valley, Mojave Desert, Transverse Ranges)
- fourth order, if used: Fenneman's section or more local variations in surface relief (e.g., Morongo Basin in the southern Mojave)
- fifth order, if used: very local contrasts in relief (e.g., Parlett Mountains in Morongo Basin in Joshua Tree!)
