Lab 1b: Latitude

The date and sun angle are provided for the following cases. Find the declination of the sun for each date and then calculate "your" latitude. Click here for a summary of the lecture on the process.

L = 90° - S + D  (where:  S is Sun angle, D is Declination)
            -

Lab 1c: Time

This part of the lab focuses on the relationship between time and longitude, eventually allowing you to tackle the airplane flight questions in section 3.

  1. Longitude and Time:

    a.
What standard time is it in Ndjamena, Chad (15° E) when it is 9 am on a Wednesday in Durango, Mexico (105° W)? _________________________

    b.
What standard time of which day is it in Osaka, Japan (135° E) when it is 9 pm on a Saturday in Fresno, CA (120° W)? _________________________

  2. Central Meridians and Time Zones:

    a.
Consider the time zone eight hours earlier than Greenwich ...
    i.
What is the longitude of its central meridian? _________________________

    ii.
Give the longitudes of its (theoretical) boundaries. _________________________
    b.
What is the central meridian for the time zone in which Adelaide, Australia (139° E) is located? _________________________

    c.
What is the central meridian for Chicago (88° W)? _________________________

  3. Travel, Time, and Longitude:

Click here for a summary of the lecture on the process of finding arrival times for plane flights.

    a.
At which standard time and day will a plane arrive in Denver (104°30'W) if it leaves Burbank (118°10'W) at 7 am, Friday, and the flight takes two and a half hours? _________________________

    b.
At which standard time and day will a plane arrive in NYC (74° W) if it leaves Helsinki (25° E) at 9:30 am Thursday and the flight takes twelve and a half hours? _________________________

    c.
At which standard time and day will a plane arrive in Vladivostok, Russia (132° E) if it leaves Kiev, Ukraine (30°30'E) at 6 am Tuesday and the flight takes 13 hours? _________________________

    d.
At which standard time and day will a plane arrive in Honolulu (158° W) if it leaves Tokyo (140° E) at 7 am Monday and the flight takes 6 hours? _________________________

    e.
At which standard time and day will a plane arrive in Auckland, New Zealand (175° E) if it leaves Vancouver, BC (122°30'W) at 9 am Wednesday and the flight takes 14 hours? _________________________

    f.
At which standard time and day will a plane arrive in Los Angeles (118° W) if it leaves Sydney, Australia (151°30'E) at 8 pm Thursday and the flight takes 14 hours? _________________________
