Simplified Process for Determining Latitude at Noon
(omitting consideration of the equation of time)
Ask yourself: Is it noon?
- No? Wait until it is
- Yes? Proceed to next step
Take sun angle
Subtract sun angle from 90°
Tentatively identify the hemisphere you think you're in
(assume you are in the hemisphere opposite the horizon you used to sight the sun)
Look up delination in chart or analemma
Ask yourself: Is the declination in the same hemisphere you think you're in?
- Yes?
- Add declination to rest of equation
- Put the proper hemisphere suffix after the answer
- You are done
- No?
- Subtract declination from rest of equation
- Ask yourself: Did the answer turn up negative?
- No (you have a normal, positive answer)?
- Put the proper hemisphere suffix after the answer
- You are done
- Yes?
- You are not in the hemisphere you thought you were in.
- Drop negative sign
- Change the hemisphere and put it after the answer
- You are done
