Grading and practices:
This laboratory will count between 20% and 30% of your semester grade for the entire course, the exact proportion to be determined by your lecture instructor. It will not be possible to pass the course without passing the laboratory as well.
The bulk of your grade for the lab portion of the course will come from your performance in the laboratory. There are 10 experiments, each of which will count count 10 points. Included in that 10 point total is a 2-point pre-lab reading quiz that will be administered during the first 5 minutes of each class. The reading quizzes will be closed book, and will generally involved writing a sentence or two based on your reading the laboratory manual and the readings from the textbook. The purpose of the reading quizzes is to determine the effort you have made in preparing for the lab ahead of time, and not necessarily "getting the right answer".
Additionally, there will be a final exam in the laboratory
portion of this course, involving three tasks you should have mastered
in handling the apparatus and making measurements. This final will
be "open notebook" in that you will be allowed to use any of your *GRADED
LABORATORY REPORTS ONLY* as resources. Each task will be worth 10
points as well. Therefore, the final carries the same weight as three
of your lab writeups.
