The Materials Characterization Laboratory has recently started Biophysics research using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). This research is performed in collaboration with the Biochemistry Department at Long Beach State University. This research has been centered on the environmental factors affecting growth characteristics of protein aggregates including amyloid fibrils.

Recent research has been directed at the study of population characteristics of insulin amyloid fibril growth in a controlled environment. The goal of this research is to assist in the prevention and correction of various diseases involving amyloid fibrils such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Lou Gehrig's disease.
