Study Guide

1. Read the character text and try to understand it.

Some notes:

a. duì le - means 'that's right, that's correct'

duì can be used in V+bu+V pattern - duì bu duì which means 'correct or not?' The answer is either duì (correct) or bú duì (not correct, wrong)
b. hé - means 'and'.
wo hé Pàlánka döu xuéxí Hànyu - means 'Palanka and I all study Chinese'.

In English, one does not say 'I and Palanka'. In Chinese 'wo hé Pàlánka' is the accepted order. Also note that 'hé' in Chinese joins two noun phrases only. For example:

wo hé Pàlánka
Wáng laoshï hé Xiè laoshï.
Zhöngguó rén hé Meiguó rén.

c. döu - means 'all', but pay attention to the position of this ' döu'
Wo bàba mäma döu hen hao.
Tämen döu hen máng.
Gubö hé Pàlánka döu xuéxí Hànyu.

Where should döu be? If you still can't figure out, go to the textbook, page 102 and see the grammar notes for 'ye, bù, döu, hen'

a. Say the following in Chinese:

Palanka knows (a) Chinese student Ding Yun.
Ding Yun studies English and French.
Now she is going to see Prof. Wang.

Gubo is Palanka's boy friend.
They both (all) study Chinese.
They often speak Chinese.

Prof. Wang asks Gubo and Palanka: "Are you busy?"
They say: "We study Chinese now. We are all very busy."
