III    PREREQUISITES: MATH 361B.

IV   TEXTBOOK: General Topology, by Stephen Willard. 

V    COURSE CONTENT: We will study Chapters 1-6, and 8 of the textbook. We begin with the rationale for studying topological spaces and cover some of the main features of topology including: construction of topological spaces, convergence, separation, compactness, compactifications, connectedness, topologies on function spaces.


VII    TESTS: There will be Two tests and a comprehensive final exam.  Dates and topics are tentative.

You must be present for all tests and exams. In general, no make-up exams will be given except for serious and compelling reason.

VI    GRADING: Grades will be based on homework (15%), two midterm tests (60%), and the final exam (25%). Letter grades will be assigned as follows: 100%-91% A, 90%-80% B, 79%-65% C, 64%-50% D.

VII    DEADLINES: The deadline for withdrawing from this course without a W on your record is Monday, February 11. Withdrawals after this deadline and before Friday, April 25 are permitted for serious and compelling reasons only and require the approval of the Chair of the Department of Mathematics.
