III TEXTBOOK: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics,
6/e, by Smith, Eggen, and St. Andre.
VI PREREQUISITES: MATH 123 or 222
V COURSE CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES: We will
cover Chapters 1–5 (and parts of Chapters 6 and 7 as time permits).
This course is an introduction to advanced mathematics. Mathematicians
use inductive reasoning (using observations to formulate a general
theory) to discover patterns, but it is deductive reasoning (using
logic to draw conclusions based on accepted assumptions) that
characterizes the way mathematics is written and communicated. In this
course we study the structure of deductive reasoning in various
mathematical contexts including: set theory, functions, relations,
induction and recursion, counting, congruence, and number theory.
VI ASSIGNMENTS: Homework assignments are the
core of this course, so you are urged to do them diligently. Late
assignments will not be accepted.
VII TESTS: There will be three tests and a comprehensive final exam. Test dates and topics are tentative.

Letter grades will be assigned as follows: 100%-90% A, 89%-80% B, 79%-65% C,
64%-50% D.
IX DEADLINES: The deadline for withdrawing from this
course without a W on your record is Monday, September 11. Withdrawals after this
deadline and before Friday, November 17 are permitted for serious and compelling
reasons only and require the approval of the Chair of the Department of
Mathematics. A copy of the withdrawal policy for the College of Natural
Sciences and Mathematics is available at the Department Office.
X OTHER REGULATIONS: 1. The instructor should be
notified in advance by the student of the need for accommodation of a university
verified disability. 2. Please refer to the "General Regulations and
Procedures" in the Catalog for other policies governing standards of
conduct at the university.
