• Idea goes back to 1916 Fenneman article "The Physiographic Subdivision of the United States":
• Used since in introductory geography textbooks
• First order: continents vs. oceans
• Second order: Fenneman's physiographic divisions
• Third order: Fenneman's geomorphic provinces
• Fourth order (if used): Fenneman's sections
• Authors use from 3 - 7 orders
• I created one for Mars for my class
