Edward Karabenick, Ph.D.

Supporting the Community

Dr. Karabenick and his family were long active supporters of community institutions. For those who are considering reïnforcing his interests, here are links to the recipients of his donations:

Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County is a philanthropic organization rooted in and serving the needs of the 20,000 Jewish people in the Greater Long Beach Area. It is the publisher of the Jewish Community Chronicle, the voice of Jewish Long Beach. Their philanthropic mission is "to connect those who want to help with those who need it most," and you can learn how to support the organization at their Ways to Give web page.

The Long Beach Playhouse has served the Greater Long Beach community with live theatrical productions for nine decades. It maintains two theatres, the Mainstage and the Studio, at 5021 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA (on Anaheim just east of PCH across from Recreation Park). It offers as many as sixteen plays each year. Due to COVID, it is temporarily closed, but it has adapted by offering an online theatre experience! You can learn how to donate to The Playhouse at their Donations page.

Dr. Karabenick, his wife, Florine, and his daughter, Andrea (who graduated CSULB with a B.A. in Psychology) were often donors to the Department of Geography. The Department has grown and changed with the comings and goings of faculty, staff, and students, but it preserves the distinctive culture of civility, kindness, and intellectual curiosity about the world that Dr. Karabenick and his cohort created here. You can learn about the Department to which Dr. Karabenick devoted his professional life at its Geography web site and you can earmark donations to the Department at Giving link.

Dr. Karabenick was also involved in the formation of the Jewish Studies Program, which débuted in October 1999. As stated by its first director, the late Dr. Arlene Lazarowitz, "Our goal is to serve the intellectual life of the university by providing a wide range of classes in Jewish Studies and hiring and retaining first rate faculty. ... One of the strengths of the Jewish Studies Program has been the involvement and participation of the Greater Long Beach Jewish community." Dr. Karabenick's GEOG 309I course (Geography of the Middle East and North Africa) was part of its early minor program, and the program now offers a major as well as a minor, both also featuring GEOG 309I. To learn more about the program, you can visit the Jewish Studies web site and its dedicated Giving link.
