Effective 24 August 2009POSITION: GIScience and geovisualization, with research specialization in urban applications of GIS, at the Assistant Professor (tenure track) level
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in geography, GIScience, geovisualization, or related field with specialization in urban applications of GIS; demonstrated or potential ability for effective teaching in lower division geographic methods, introductory and advanced cartography and GIS, including urban applications, and major courses in areas of expertise; demonstrated or potential ability and willingness to generate funding for research and undergraduate and graduate student support from extramural sources.
DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: some combination of expertise and/or experience in geotechniques related to data visualization, geospatial web/interactive mapping, programming, map use and design, spatial cognition, emergency preparedness and disaster response, land use planning, housing, transportation and/or migration; demonstrated willingness to work in interdisciplinary research teams; successful grant seeking record.
DUTIES:
- Teach courses that address introductory and advanced topics in geography and geographic information science including:
- Introduction to Research Methods for Geographers (GEOG 200);
- GIScience, including GEOG 280 (Introduction to Geospatial Techniques), GEOG 485/585 (Principles of GIScience); GEOG 488/588 (Advanced Topics in GIS);
- Urban and/or Economic Geography (GEOG 467/567 [Metropolitan Problems] and GEOG 487B/587B [Urban/Economic Applications of GIS]);
- Land Use Planning (GEOG 446); and/or
- Cartographic Design and Geovisualization (GEOG 482 and GEOG 484/584).
- Develop courses in areas of experise, including advanced cartographic presentation and geovisualization, interactive web/map design, and advanced economic and/or urban geography courses.
- Assess and redesign existing courses, as needed on an on-going basis, to keep them current.
- Participate actively in interdisciplinary activities, networks, and centers on campus.
- Conduct research and seek extramural funding in areas of expertise
- Supervise graduate students and teach graduate seminars in Geography
- Attend Geography Department meetings and participate in Geography, College, and University affairs.
Final determination of teaching assignment is dependent on departmental needs. SALARY:
Commensurate with training and experience; probable beginning salary: $60,000- $62,000.
