GEOG/ES&P 330 Field Trip Paperwork

California Ecosystems

==========

The California State Universities now require all students and faculty going into the field to fill out a lot of paperwork. This paperwork creates a record for the University on where its students and employees are in the event of a disaster, injury, or illness, so that they can be located and rescued if necessary. It also compels faculty and students to think about their personal safety and plan for risks they may encounter. The paperwork also makes sure that field participants understand that they are legally responsible for their own health and safety and protects the University from unknowingly taking on risks. The new attention to these matters came about when UCLA found it had students in Libya when the rebellion that deposed Qaddafi began (and one joined the rebellion) back in 2011.
