In order to have accurate and current information on the number of U.S. casualties in the Afghan War that followed the attacks of 11 September 2001, I decided to compile a listing on my own. I utilized three different sources:
- An article that appeared on abcNEWS.com in 2003: "Casualties of 'Enduring Freedom': U.S. Personnel Killed in the U.S.-Led War on Terror," which I accessed from http://abcnews.go.com/sections/US/DailyNews/STRIKE_Casualties.html on 11 May.
- A list compiled by Anthony Keats for the Center for Defense Information Terrorism Project, which I accessed at http://www.cdi.org/terrorism/oefcasualties-pr.cfm on 11 May 2003
- A list compiled for the Orders of Battle web site, entitled, "Operation Enduring Freedom: Coalition Casualties Operations, v.2.0 June 16, 2002," which I accessed at http://orbat.com/site/agtwopen/casualties2.html

You may download the files in either of two formats:
- USdeathsEF.xls, which is a Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 file that should be readable by all subsequent versions of Excel
- USdeathsEF.csv, which is a Comma Separated Value file that can generally be imported into any spreadsheet or database program
Your browser will inform you that it can't open the files and will ask what to do. Select Save File and save it to some place on your hard drive or floppy drive. Then, open it in Excel or whichever program you plan to use.

I'll try to keep it updated as news developments warrant. If you know of errors or additions, please feel free to contact me. Also, please let me know if you have problems reading the files. Thank you.
