"The Philosophy of Art Law"

by Julie Van Camp

Metaphilosophy XXV (January 1994): 60-70

I outline the emerging specialty of philosophy of art law -- its purpose, object of study, and subject matter -- and compare it with legal analysis and reasoning, established work in philosophy of law, and the "law and literature movement." The purposes of philosophy of art law are considered, including its impact on the practice of art law, as well as the broadening of the communities of discourse about art studied by philosophers. The subject matter of philosophy of art law is sketched, including epistemological, metaphysical, and axiological issues.
