Grading:

Take home midterm 1 =25%,

Take home midterm 2 =25%,

Take home final exam =30%.

Homework =20%.

Your grade will be based on the total number of points obtained from homework, midterms and final exam.

Text Book:

1) An introduction to Modern Astrophysics by Bradley W. Carroll and Dale A. Osttlie.

2) My lecture notes in Astrophysics. You are encouraged to be present in every class to take notes during my lectures. Use your textbook as a reference to the lectures.

Material Covered: The exact material covered usually depends upon each class's interest and abilities; however, the basics will include:

Chapter 2: Sections: All.  Topic: Review of classical mechanics. HW: 1-4, 9,12-14,15. (See computer code: orbit).

Chapter 19: Sections: 19.2 and 19.3. Topics: Tidal Forces, Roach limit and Planetary Atmosphere. HW:  4,7,8,12, 13, 14, 21.                                                                      

Chapter 20: Section: 20.4. Topic: Radioactive Dating. HW: 14, 16, and 17.

Chapter 3: Sections: 3-5. Topics: Spectrum of Light. HW: 5-9, 10-12, and 14.

Chapter 12: Sections: 12.1, 12.2. Topic: The interstellar medium and Star Birth. HW: 10, 13-14, 15 (Hint: Use problem 13 a).

Chapter 10: Sections: All. Topics: Interior of Stars. HW: 3, 5, 7 (Hint: Use problem 3), 15.

Chapter 11: Sections: Pages: 370-380. Topic: The Sun. HW: Given in class.

Chapter 9: Sections: 1-3. Topic: Stellar Atmosphere.  HW: Given in class.

Chapter 14: Sections: 1-3. Topic: Stellar Pulsation. HW: Given in class.
