Physics 152 Sample Test Problems

This is not an actual test. You should time yourself and find out how fast you can answer them.

10 ) An electron is released from rest at the negative plate of a parallel plate capacitor. If the distance across the plate is 5 mm and the potential difference across the plate is 5 V, with what velocity does the electron hit the positive plate?

(melectron = 9.1 x 10^(-31) kg, qe = 1.6 x 10^(-19) C)

a. 2.65 x 10^5 m/s

b. 5.30 x 10^6 m/s

c. 1.06 x 10^6 m/

d. 1.33 x 10^6 m/s

12 ) A nonconducting spherical shell with inner radius a and outer radius b has a volume
charge density of roh = A/r, where A is a constant and r is the distance from the center of the shell. In addition (just to
make things interesting) a point charge of qo is located at the center of the sphere.

Derive the equation which would give the magnitude of the E-field in the regions shown.

Solution for Region III - Outside of the shell.
This can be done with the same procedure as above, but this time, regardless of how far out we are, all of the charge will be
within the Gaussian surface. What will change is how we calculate Qenc. The integral will go from a to b, and not all the way
out to r. You can only add up charge where there's charge, and there's no charge past b.

13 ) Three resistors connected in parallel have individual values of 4.0, 6.0 and 10.0 ohms,

respectively. If this combination is connected in series with a 12.0 V battery and a 2.0 ohm resistor, what is the current in the 10 ohm resistor?

a. 0.59 A

b. 1.0 A

c. 11.2

d.16.0 A

14 ) An electric toaster requires 1100 W at 110 Volts. What is the resistance of the heating coil?

a. 7.5 W

b. 9.0 W

c. 10.0 W

d. 11.0 W
