Analysis of written comments:
At the time of evaluations, enrollment in the course was 117, and 69
students filled out evaluation forms. Of those 69, 40 had extra written
comments to make.
These comments range all over the map, from complaints about individualt lab instructors, the legibility of the online notes, the pacing fo the class and the amount of infomration we cover, to livening up the presentation, and putting more of my grading information on Beachboard.
Comments made during standard class evaluations:
1. I like that we have the opportunity to revise and resubmit our
work. The tests were ok. I like how the essay questions were
broken down into smaller segments, so it didn't feel like an overwhelming
essay.
2. Good teacher, I like how you put the EMS diagram on every exam.
3. Great class! I don't do well in science, but I understood this
course. About the labs ... I don't like the
supergroups.
4. I appreciated your flexibility regarding the course (i.e. due
dates, extra credit, and notes).
5. The comment that I have is about the "lab". Mr. **** should
do a better job in teaching the lab.
6. The extra credits, notes, and system of the class has made this
class a lot better than I had expected.
7. Science is definitely my leaset-favorite subject, yet Professor
Pickett was able to keep my attention and make the class not too difficult.
Great job!
8. Great teacher.
9. The labs don't seem to have anything do
do with the class.
10. Great professor! I learned a lot both in lecture and in the
lab. The online notes were very helpful and clearly detailed.
However, sometimes I felt like you talked too fast
to keep up with what you were lecturing. Overall, this class
was very interesting.
11. Even though I'm not doing so well in this class, but I think
the professor did a great job in presenting the lecture notes in the class.
Sometimes it does get confusing because there are too much information.
For the exam, there is never enough time to do the whole test and that's
why I didn't do too well on the exams. Test
problems should be less. I like how the professor allows the
students to have a chance to correct the take home experiments so we can
get a better grade.
12. Both the lab book and the text book need
to be edited. There is some info that seems that it could be left
out, but everything seems to go on and on and on in length. I think
of it could be simplified.
13. Pointless to go to class b/c it wasn't worth the time,
and could still do ok on tests and homework.
14. Prof. Pickett was very helpful and accomodating to the students;
however, some of the information could have been
made a bit more interesting?
15. The lab section of the course was one of the worst classes that
I ever attended. The lab teacher was impossible to understand because
of his accent, did not provide information on how
to do the lab, did not grade our labs (he simply put scores and made no
comments - two people would received same score, one person filling out
everything and the other student filling out half), didn't answer questions
when asked. I ended up explaining the lab to the rest of the
students when they would ask questions. My lab professor was ***
and I just didn't want other students to experience that lab again.
16. Pickett was nothing short of a FABULOUS professor.
The only thing I would recomend is that the notes
online be a bit more LEGIBLE, possibly typed out. :)
17. Overall, I felt that the class was alright. Mostly I just
felt that the class needed to pay attention a bit more. I really
liked that the notes were online and the tests were open book open note.
18. Made the course easy to understand and was great at letting
students re-do and turn in work late.
19. Great job! I appreciated the flexibility of due dates,
and I learned a lot. I sometimes felt that
the notes were a little cluttered, but they were still helpful.
20. This class was very informative, thank you for all the helpful
guidelines.
21. I think this course is difficult and I really appreciate the
mini experiments to boost our grades on the tests. One
improve ment I would make would be to keep pace with the labs.
22. You were a lot of help. Thanks for being available after
class to clarify certain topics.
23. Professor was well informed and always prepared for class.
There was never anything unexpected. I liked the way the class was
run. THanks for a good semester!
24. The subject of the class is extremely boring, however, Professor
Pickett was a very helpful teacher and understanding.
25. The study guides and notes online are very helpful but the
subject matter is still a little dry.
26. The grading was very fair! I'm glad you let us use everything
on our tests thankyou! That helped greatly!
27. It would be helpful to go over some of
the lab material in lecture before the exam.
28. I think on the website, due dates should
be more clear and if you go over THExp info in class it should be on there.
Not for those who decide not to come but for those who missed days for
a reason.
29. Sooo much information presented for a 100 level class - but
made it fair w/ open note/book tests. Some of the THE's were difficult
(bouncing ball). Thank you for extra credit!!
30. Too much information is presented in too
short of a time. For a 100-level class. I think the amount
of material is ridiculous. I have sadly taken this class three
times now, and I do want to congratulate you for making it much more
bearable than **** or **** ever did. The tests in here and the use
of open book and notes really helped me to be successfull this time.
31. Very helpful when I had any questions (especially about the
essay questions). Made material very accessible for class.
32. Class was well structures. Helpful that we could re-sbumit
work w/ improvements.
33. Please assign lab instructors who speak
English well. It is very difficult to understand concepts which are
new when you can't understand what they are saying. Don't make exams
cumulative, there is sooo much info in each section, too much to go back
and restudy the old stuff too. Liven up class...
34. Lectures tended to be boring. Only
repeating what was on the board instead of talking directly to class.
35. More legible lecture notes, good that
they are available online. Fair tests and chance to improve
turned in work. Make class more entertaining
.. it is at 8 am.
36. Slow down! Printing out notes from online - too costly
and waste of paper. Difficult to keep up when
taking notes. Try using beachboard to update students regarding questions
about grades.
37. I thought that your class was great. The homeworks were
reasonable and the timing in which it was due are the same. The only
thing I would suggest is to have the coversheed passed out to student one
meeting before the test so they can see how it is.
38. I think that the test should be shorter
or maybe less essay questions because there is not enough time to
complete the exam.
39. I don't like the Adobe format of the notes
online, they are hard to print out.
40. The note that are available on-line are very helpful and appreciated.
Having the ability to turn in extra credity is also appreciated.
Overall I think Pickett is very effective in teaching his class.
