Analysis of written comments:
At the time of evaluations, enrollment in the course was 31, and 21
students filled out evaluation forms. Of those 21, 12 had extra
written comments to make.
I had established two unusual policies for this lab section, each of
which earned comment by most of the students.
First, I insisted that the lab writeups
be finished and turned in during the lab period. Secondly,
I gave a short quiz during the first 5 minutes of class covering the
lab that the students were going to be doing.
Students are abmivalent on the whole about he quizzes, but are quite enthusiastic
about completing the labs in the given time. I am quite satisfied
with both practices, and will continue them in my next lab courses.
Comments made during standard class evaluations:
1. I thought this class was fun. I haven't taken a science
class in 4 years. But he explained thing good so anyone could do
the experiments.
2. Good job
3. Keep up the good work ... and take over Kuck's job, please.
4. I love that we turn in labs the day we
do them. After discussing with group members and answering questions
for 1 to 2 hours, I feel a formal write up would just be busy work.
It also prevents people from leaving early and not helping their group.
The reading quizzes weren't very helpful, but I did
well on them anyway. It would be less work for you if you
took them out. Thanks for all your help!
5. After the reading quiz, it would be helpful
if you went over the answer.
6. The reading quizzes were helpful.
Turning labs the same day is also good b/c otherwise
I think we would forget the information from the lab.
7. I really enjoyed the lab and Dr. Pickett was extremely available
the help us at any time. I don't feel the quizzes
were efective since none seemed to read the material prior to class, but
Dr. Pickett always explained the material clearly and I wish I would have
taken his lecture. He was great to learn from and very supportive
and knowledgable. Thanks.
8. In science, it takes a through and direct person to convey complex
theories to simple students like those at LBSU. Dr. Pickett is highly
qualified to explain and teach and get people (like me) that are not necessarily
science-minded to understand concepts and principles through activities.
9. Need more excitement in class.
10. I think professor Pickett was very effective and he explained
things well. I would, though reccommend that he spend more time going
around the class and getting to all the groups.
11. I really love that we can re-do the labs and turn them back
in. I also love that we need to finish the
labs before we leave, and turn them in.
12. The reading quizzes do not test for looking
at the lab. I look and understand the labs but do not
always get points for them. Turning in the
lab the same day is a great idea. If I had a week I would not
do them.
