PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

My long-term involvement in international education is evident through my two years of teaching as a senior lecturer in Nigeria, under a Fulbright Hays fellowship, a semester of teaching at Hangzhou University in the People's Republic of China, a semester on sabbatical in Quito, Ecuador at the Universidad de San Francisco, a consultancy with Teacher Corps in Micronesia, a summer studying ESL in Mexico, as well as teaching for the U.S. schools for seven years in Germany and Japan.  More recently, I served as a visiting professor in South Korea, Nepal, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, the graduate school of Peking University, and Turkey.

At CSULB, I have directed the University's study-abroad programs; helped establish and implement the Global Education Program in Southern California through a statewide grant; assisted in coordinating the International Student Teacher Exchange Program in England, Wales, and Mexico; and have been actively involved in the all-university effort to internationalize the curriculum, including study/work abroad, and international service learning opportunities. Currently, I am the Founding Member of the university’s Global Studies Institute.

Teaching:  I have a career-long interest in both the complexity and joys of the teaching/learning process — especially courses involving social justice issues as they impact the education sector in both the domestic and international realms. However, as the former director of the department's Educational Psychology Clinic, I have also taught in the areas of learning disabilities, counseling, and human development.

Research:  My overall area of research interest is human diversity in its multiple dimensions, particularly in the field of educational anthropology - cultural transmission/social reproduction.  Secondarily, I focus on instructors’ responsibility as change agents for social justice.  I am also involved in researching the rights of women in economically emerging countries.
