For this essay you will have exactly 45 minutes from the start of class until you must email the results of the exam to me. Failure to comply will result in loss of a grade.

The essay question will be posted here when the exam is to be done. A sample will be provided for use in this project.

Directions:

You will have a total of 60 minutes to respond to the topic below. Express your thoughts carefully, logically, and effectively. Remember to provide examples and pertinent evidence to support your ideas. Think about we have discussed in class about ways to write a compare and contrast essay. Have a clear purpose in mind.

DO NOT WRITE ON A TOPIC OTHER THAN THE ONE ASSIGNED BELOW

The Topic:

Please read and think about the following two quotations:

"Any homeless person could get a job if he really wanted to work."

"Most homeless people were once normal working citizens who were let down by society."

Write an essay where you . . .

1. Compare the statements. Explain how the two statements are similar or share things in common.

2. Contrast the statements. Explain how the two statements differ.

3. Take a position with respect to the two statements by defending one of them or mediating between them, and justify your defense with an example from your own observation or experience.
