Third Grade Hands-On Science (TGHOS)

I currently run a program that teaches hands-on science to third graders at Longfellow Elementary School (LBUSD) in Long  Beach, CA.  This program runs for seven weeks beginning in February, thus every Spring semester CSULB students have the opportunity to teach science to third graders.   Lessons are taught Friday afternoons, from 1:15 pm until 2:15 pm to classes with 20 third grade students.  The Longfellow teacher is always present, so discipline is not a problem for science teachers.   For the first six weeks, students follow lesson plans and are given all necessary materials.  The CSULB student then must design an experiment and procure supplies for the last lesson.

Students enrolled in the course must also write a paper describing their experiences.  Many students keep a weekly journal, and edit this for their final paper.

CSULB students enjoy the teaching experience.  Many are scared at the beginning, but the enthusiasm shown by third graders is infectious, and many CSULB students have commented that this was one of their most enjoyable undergraduate experiences.

If you are interested in being involved in TGHOS, you must register for a one-unit Science Education class.  To do this, you must first talk to me so I can issue a permit.  Please contact me via email at bruss@csulb.edu.
