Classes Taught

Biol 370    General Genetics

4 units, Fall Semesters.

General Genetics covers Mendelian, Molecular and Population Genetics,  including a primary literature paper on Functional Genomics.

Biol 340L   Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory Class

3 units, First Module Fall Semesters.

The first module of the Cell and Molecular Biology lab class includes molecular biology experiments.  Large BAC clones are analyzed by electrophoresis and by bioinformatics.  Primers are designed for PCR amplification of the genome for subsequent cloning and sequencing in order to produce RFLP markers.  Real time PCR is also performed on RNA isolated in class.

Biol 447/547   Molecular Plant Physiology

3 units, Spring Semesters.

This class covers Water Relations, Devleopment and Biochemistry of Plants.  Topics are studied in detail using both a Plant Physiology textbook and primary literature.  Students learn to read modern molecular primary literature and improve their oral and written presentation skills.

Biol 211A   Introduction to Biological Sciences

5 units, Second Half, Spring Semesters.

This class is required for all Biological Sciences majors, and covers the molecules of Biology, Respiration and Photosynthesis.  During the second half of the semester, students learn about mitosis, meiosis, genetics, biotechnology, the origin of life, evolution, and population genetics.

SCED 496   Third Grade Hands-On Science

1 unit, Spring Semesters.

TGHOS offers students a chance to teach science to third graders at a public Long Beach elementary school.  For more information, please see the link on my home page.
